The Bay City theme Empty The Bay City theme

Here is some of what the Lindens said about the initial theme for Bay City as a whole, for us to chew on.

http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/22/linden-department-of-public-works-update/
"The style is the American urban experience, between 1940 and 1965, perhaps best typified by Chicago circa 1950 and marked by a distinct deco influence."

http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/08/bay-city-up-and-running/
"Governor Linden said in a pre-recorded statement, 'We hope that the Residents of this new city will produce interesting and attractive structures, in styles appropriate to the period 1930 to 1960 when most of our buildings were erected. In any case, the Residents of Bay City will form a unique and bustling community.'"

I'll post a few design resources here -- what are yours? Are you staying with theme, or going some other route? What buildings in our city seem to best typify the theme as presented?

I have set up 2 buildings; the Legal Building in Imaginario is based on, and made with the textures and samples supplied in the BAY CITY 1.1 texture pack that can be found in the harbor warehouse. The Police station in Imaginario is clearly an early 60-ties brutalist concrete building and represents the end of the period.

Gavin,

I was admiring your building the other day, actually. A great take on the look, and well done.

My own build is mid-50s, a storefront with a neon-lit sign out front. Not very deco, but seems to fit okay period wise and plot wise. I had initially designed it for a plot I did not win in Docklands.

Meanwhile, here's a couple resources for those who are angling for the look.

The Bay City theme Empty building style

Post  KirachanFitzgerald Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:22 pm

When I built my store and the bar I was honestly not concerned with style.. but with prim-lows.
Pulled them all up in one night each.:*G* But I might rethink that a little. Not that I have many prims to play around with.. but I could at least adjust my textures a bit. The shop would go more in the 50ies 60ies direction though... due to the stuff I sell that makes sense. For the bar I would have to find a style that combines the openness with a suitable look.

For the Centre it was also mostly low prim.. the decor is not period styled at all.. if at all a little 60ies. I am just not good on the earlier styles..*G*

I would like the place to stay more in style.. but it is an urban environment.. and there will always be a jumble of different period buildings. They should just be believable.... in my eyes.

The Bay City theme Empty New CnSL Building

Post  Shadoe Landman Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:01 pm

Our new CnSL tower would take far too many prims if I used all Bay City textures since there don't seem to be any wall textures that include transparent windows. I tried to make the best deco tower shape that I could (Empire State Building and Bank of America Building style), but I hope no one dislikes the marble texture. I didn't use any non-BC textures over 256x256 except for our sign texture, and most are lower because I didn't want to increase lag. It's bad enough when you're selling textures (though they're less likely to be in your field of vision than the upper floors).

Oh, and if your draw distance is far enough that you see the skybox and you think it's too obtrusive, let me know. We may get rid of it anyway so we can use the prims in the store. (We're not going to raise it any higher because things tend to get more mis-aligned at higher elevations.)
